Bowers first tested his wa
ter mulch theory on uncropped
soil. He found that the water
bags reduced maximum tem
perature and increased mini

mulch were best demonstrated
during an unseasonable cold
snap, Bowers said. One Sep
tember day during the experi
ment, snow fell and air tem
perature dropped from the
mid-40’s to 24 degrees F. Mini
mum soil surface temperatures
were 32 degrees F. on the un
mulched plots, 36 degrees P.
on the plots mulched with plas
