6th Grape State,
Pa. Considering
Wine Industry
HARRISBURG—The possibil
ity of establishing a wine in
dustry in Pennsylvania is be
ing explored by the State Grape
Marketing Advisory Council.
The group is the sixth com
modity council formed in the
state to help develop new and
stronger markets for Pennsyl
vania agricultural prod ucts.
Pennsylvania is the nation’s
fifth leading grape producing
state, with a crop valued in ex
cess of $6 million annually.
State agriculture secretary
Leland H. Bull told council
members that a much more in
tensive marketing effort will
be required to cope witk. “pro
duction increases anticipated in
the years immediately ahead.”
He pointed out that the num
ber of grape vines in commer
cial vineyards has increased ap
proximately 20 percent in the
past three years.
In addition to investigating
the possibility of a wine indus
try as a new market for grapes,
the council also will seek meth
ods of expanding both fresh
and processing markets.
The council, at its organiza
tional meeting in Erie, named
Douglas P Moorehead, chair
man; George F Luke, vice
chairman, and George Sceiford,
secretary All aie from North
