Control Of Corn
Pests Begins
With Plowing
Corn pest control has to be
gin before you see any sign of
disease or insect in the field,
says University of Maryland
specialists.
“If you wait until corn stalks
rots show up on the crop, it
may be too late to do much
about them,” says Dr. L. 0.
Weaver, extension plant pathol
ogist.
“Some insects, particularly
the European corn borer, also
have to be controlled long be
fore damage appears,” adds
Ted Bissell, extension entomol
ogist.
Fortunately, the two special
ists agree, one conti ol method
is effective against both pests.
Plowing under corn stalks and
corn trash so they are com
pletely covered with soil will
help kill both hibernating corn
borers and the fungi which
cause two common stalk rots.
After corn borer moths be
gin flying, spraying sweet corn
or Sevm can help keep corn
borer damage to a minimum,
but spraying field corn usually
costs more than it saves. Borer
damage in corn causes stalks

to fall over and makes harvest
ing difficult.
Stalk rots also cause stalks
to fall over as the corn ripens.
Rots, like most fungus diseases,
usually grow faster in wet sea
sons, and unbalanced soil fer
tility is always conducive to
