Moist soil and cool weather helps young plants grow new roots and become well established before the hot, dry summer starts. You can buy trees from nur series either with bare roots or with a ball of soil wrapped in burlap around the roots (ball ed and burlapped), Stevens said. Bare-rooted trees usually cost less, but they generally don’t grow as fast, or as well. Also, bare-rooted trees dry out quiojdy if left uncovered: keep the roots moist and plant as soon as you can. Of course, balled and burlapped trees and shrubs should also be planted within a few days, he adds. Before you plant, pick out a good location. Plant shrubs at least three feet away from a building, Stevens says. While small flowering trees may be planted as close as eight or ten feet from the house, large shade trees should never be closer SALE SCHEDULE MARTIN'S SALE BARN AND STABLES Blue Ball, Pa., Lancaster County Wed., Apr. 12 at 9:00 A.M. When picking a spot for a tree, don’t forget about over head telephone and electric lines, sidewalks, sewer pipes, curbs and driveways. “How you plant is just as important as where you plant,” Stevens points out. He gives complete planting instructions in his circular. “Planting Trees and Shrubs.” The circular also explains how to support and water new trees and shrubs. • Have You Heard (Continued from Page 19) For Your Information Keeping the proper fat tem perature is important in deep fat frying. Too high a tempera ture causes food to brown too quickly on the outside before the inside is cooked. Too low a temperature doesn’t allow a crust to form quickly enough, causing food to become grease soaked. Ice cream baskets make a quick and easy dessert. Hollow out plain cup cakes and fill with ice cream. Top with fruit sheets and pillowcases, look for preserves. Rub a little salad oil into or “vat-dyed."
