July 1 Set As Dote For
Amended Meat Rules
The U. S. Department of Ag
riculture today amended Us
meat inspection regulations to
discontinue permitting partial
ly-dressed carcasses of animals
slaughtered on the farm with
out pre-slaughter inspection to
enter federally-inspected pack
ing plants
The change, which was pro
posed Feb 8, 1966, becomes ef
fective July 1, 1967.
Officials of USDA’s Consum
er and Marketing Service, which
administers the federal meat
inspection program, said the
exemption has been used in
recent years by only one seg
ment of the livestock industry.
C&MS added that the amend
ment does not affect regula
tions which permit certain non
federally-inspected farm-prepar
ed meat and meat products to
be shipped in interstate or for
eign commerce.
The amendment will further
assure consumers that only
wholesome and adequately-in
spected bears the mark
of federal inspection, officials
said. For example, certain con
ditions such as chemical resi
dues, and nervous system dis
eases can only be detected dur
ing inspection of live animals
Also, the dressing of an ani
mal that had died other than
by slaughter could not be pre
vented without ante mortem in
spection.
