COOPER Lunch Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 4, 1967—23 seasons, and the extent of ca pacity and labor usages. SUMMARY Ir Wages and salaries in the 24 hatcheries average two-thirds of the total cost of producing each salable pullet ranging from 59 to 77 percent depend ing on capacity and utiliza tion, according to the report. Total costs for hatchery op erations ranged from slightly less than a dime to somewhat more than a quarter for each, salable pullet. Comparable costs per salable pullet in the model hatcheries were lower, ranging from about a nickel to about 23 cents, the report notes. Most of the commercial hatcheries during the study year of 1962 operated at less than 30 percent of their top capacity. Only nine plants op eiated all year. All hatcheries operated in March and April, the peak months of the Feb ruary-May season Nearly three fourths oi the hatcheries oper ated throughout this season. Costs wei e calculated for the model hatcheries on the basis of 22- and 52- week operations at various levels of capacity. The results showed most sav ings were realized when about three million eggs were set per year. The range of model op erating volumes studied was from one to 10 million eggs.
