Coif Losses Inereose With Herd Size Research has found that calf losses increased from an aver age of 11.9% in herds with less than 30 cows to 18.4% in herds with iuO cows or more. It is difficult to upgrade a dairy herd even if all heifer calves are saved. If losses are higher, the difficulties in crease. Many dairymen are in an expansion program. At best it is difficult to expand with out home raised heifers. Dairy men should remember it takes a replacement per year for every three or four cows in their milking herd. There is, it was noted, much room for reducing calf losses in all herd sizes. It may be more impor tant because the number of small dairy herds, with a sur plus of heifers for sale, is de. dining. Greater attention to freshening cows and new horn calves and providing better starter fadlifcies could do much to lower the calf loss.
