Tobacco Export
Payments To Be
Increased
In an effort to regain and
expand foreign markets, the
U. S. Department of Agricul
ture announced this week that
an increase in export payments
of 5 cents per pound will be
made later this month
This expanded program will
not affect prices on Pennsyl
vania cigar filler or Maryland
tobaccos, since these are not
under the price support pro
gram. However, it will apply to
most other tobaccos, USD A
said.
The announced payments are
in addition to exports and re
bates previously offered for
selected crops of flue-cured,
fire-cured and dark air-cmed
tobacco.
According to Department
officials, the U.S. has not shar
ed in recent increases m the
world tobacco trade. In fact,
this country’s share of that
trade declined 35 percent dur
ing the five years' 1955 59, to
26 pei cent in 1965, USD A said.
