X*—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 7, 1966 Forage Grasses Used In Water Pollution Study A method for using ferti liser elements in the liquid runoff from manure lagoons to grow forage grasses for livestock feed was outlined ibis week by a U. S. Depart ment Agriculture engineer. •Harold •J. Bby reported that fertilizer discharged by manure lagoons adds to pol lution in rivers, streams, and lakes. The nitrogen, phos phorus, and ipotassium in such runoff nurtures growth «tf algae, aquatic weeds, and slimes Which clog and foul recreational waters, kill fish, and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, Eby Mid. He reported specifically on jireliniinary laboratory tests is which forage grasses were grown in runoff from manure lagoons. The tests, -which are being conducted cooperative ly with the University of Maryland, indicate that the grasses are effective mechani- Wtynt N!W tort fed (Mffgh level mineral and vitamin fortification. Henry F. Nixon, bureau director, was elected president for the ensuing year. Arthur Jeffery, entomologist, a mem ber of the National Plant Board during the past year, was named secretary-treasur er for the next three years. Eastern Board members are cal and chemical filters for removing the dissolved solids and using up the nutrients. The forage can be used for hay, silage, or green chop. Tests show this system may also be adapted for sew age treatment, Bby said. Such a system for both live stock and sewage clean-up would result in discharge of a compa natively pollution free effluent. |w*YNE< 2 HOUSE S ROHRER’S MILL R, D. 1, Ronks MOUNTVILLE FEED SERVICE R.
