are raised from seed, bulbs,
or cuttings. Each variety
generally requires some lit
tle variation of treatment or
handl'ng. Hyacinths, tor ex
ample. The bulbs are biought
in from Holland in the Fall
They are individually potted
and stored on racks iu> a
barn which has very little
heat. Then, in early Spring
they aie moved out ot the
barn and “torced” tor the
Easter holiday. Chiysanthe
mums aie anothei example.
Cuttings are planted in open
beds in the gieenhouse in
late March. These are pinch
ed back about nnd-Apnl, and
will bloom about the first
week in August. But between
planting and blooming the
hours of light have to be
closely regulated First the
new cuttings are foiced with
four hours ot artificial lights
each night until May Ist
Then, at the end of June, a
black plastic cover is put ov
er the plants between the
hours ot 4 p m and 8 ain

is discontinued in e'arly Au
gust, the Mums are in bloom
