Crabgross Controlled
In Newly Seeded Lawns
Xowly Heeded lawns, plant
ed this Spring, can be kept
free of crahgrnss with a
chemical bearing the common
mime of siduron, l* was re
ported at the 34th annual
Turfgrass Conference at
I’enn State University.
Applied when seeding a
new lawn, siduron has given
complete control of crab
grass in two years of experi
ments by the Agricultural
Experiment Station at Pe'nn
State. Siduron was used at
rates varying from 4 to 8
pounds of active ingredient
per a'-re.
While eliminating crabgrass
In newly seeded turf, siduron
did not injure bluegrass,
stated William G. Downs, as
sociate county agent in Per
ry County who carried out
the experiments as a gradu
ate student at Penn State
In pre\ious experiments, oth
er lann grasses nere not m-
juied
“These experiments open
up the possibility of success
ful Spring and early Suln
mer seeding of turf areas,
wheie crabgrass has been, a
problem ” Downs affirmed
“Spring seeding has not been
a lecommended practice, but
a hen well established, a
lawn should remain lelative
ly fiee of crabgrass,” he
pointed out
DISTRIBUTORS

SMOKETOWN, PA.
Bven when applied 13 days
after seeding, crabgrass den
sity wa 9 reduced 70 percent,
Downs gnld. Lank of suffici
ent moisture decreased the
effectiveness of the chemical.
In the current tests, sidu
ron has not remained active
in the soli from one year
to the next. The product is
available under several brand
nnme 8 and sometimes comes
read>-mlxed with commonly
available lawn fertilizers.
