    Profitability Of High Rates Of
Fertilizer On Corn Questioned
HARRISBURG Profit
able corn production does
not always depend xn high
rates of fertilizer applica
tion, James H. Bakin, chair
man of agronomy extension
at The Pennsylvania State
University, told members of
the Pennsylvania Crop Im
provement Association at
their annual meeting in Har
risburg Tuesday.
Eakin said, “Forty pounds
of nitrogen costing $4.80
might return $l5, a second
40 pounds about $O, and a
third 40 pounds only $3. Ob
viously the third 40 pounds
would not be profitable if
the farmer had to pay $4 80
for its purchase and appli
cation.”
If the pi ice of corn dropped
from. $1 25 to tl 00 per
liushei, farmers would And
It more profitable to use less
fertilizer, Eakm reported. On
the other hand, if the price
of fertilizer dropped, it
Would be more profitable to
use moie of it.
Residual carryover of fer
tilizer is important, he point-
ed out. Very little nitrogen

Eastern Milk Producers is a bargaining organization operated solely by and
for milk-producing dairy farmers. And its only business is serving the in
terests of more than 10,000 Eastern producer members throughout the
northeast —in matters ranging from individual farm problems to important
legislative issues at all levels of government.
The depth and breadth of the scope of these services is indicated, in part
only, by the comments of the following Eastern members:
“Eastern helped us when ire ivcie in tiouhle. Vndei quaian-
Une, iv e snll icccned pa\ U i 7“i r , r'< u> milk ”
“My butteifat test at the plant it as verified by yom field man

These are but a few 1 of the countless benefits that only a financially sound,
debt-free, producer bargaining co-op can offer... while asking the lowest
membership dues. For complete information on Eastern membership ad
vantages, contact your local representative or write direct to Executive
Secretary John C. York at Eastern headquarters.
