Loss of the building and contents, in cluding the year's supply of hay and straw, some imple ments and three acres of tobacco, was estimated at $35,- 000 by Robert Baxter, Gor donville Fire Chief. The big problem faced by the firemen from the eight responding companies was the lack of a close water supply. Water was brought two miles from the Pequea Creek. A brisk wind endangered the farm house at first, Baiter said. But later tho wind calmed and firemen were able to save the house as well as the corn barn full of corn, milk house and other surrounding buildings. live stock, including cows and horses, was also saved. While this reporter was at the scene, firemen and farm ers climbed to the barn floor over the front cow stable to remove tons and tons of burn ing and smoking straw in the hope of keeping the upper story from 'falling on the cow stalls. A dangerous undertak ing at hest, they also were hampered by lack of adequate water.
