Why Crops Need Limestone
Two important Ingredients needed by crops are cal.
rliim and magnesium, Both arc regularly lost through tb,.
soil by the follow lug ways:
(t) Hy lenelilng, which Is n' slow leaking uwa.v, ~
normal process where there is rainfall.
(2) Hy crop removals, Legumes, such as hay and
other gieens, are taken oft the lields, Instead oi
plowed under.
( :l ) D.V general use of the soil
■ Hot ' lH,sp of •his I<> SS . the soli becomes what is known
as high in add. Putting on limestone muj supply calcium
and magnesium and correct the soil acidify at the sain,
time.
It has been shown in evperimonts by ngricnltiii.il
colleges and experiment stations that lor every doll.n
spent for limestone, from .$3 to .«?15 are returned to the
farmer through increased jields.
Tlie V.S. Government is so thoroughly convinced oi
the worth of applying limestone that about one-half ol
the cost is granted free when application is made for it
This is to encourage tanners to be certain to use lime
stone.
It does pay to use limestone!
