AKCASTER poultry center L Toilers Gain Two Cents B Live broiler prices jumped more than two cents a pound it the January 9 auction at he Lancaster Poultry Center. A total of 43,800 birds in sight lots changed hands at prices of 17.5 to 19.3 for a ( ale average of 17.61. Average lor the previous week was 15.59 after tvo weeks of very tew broilers and prices below 12 cents for the two year-end loliday weeks. Three lots of 4,050 pullets irought 21 1 to 22.0 and three ots containing 4,250 leghorn lowl sold at 8.4 to 8.7. Only I two lots on offer were not sold; these a lot of 950 White Vantress pullets at 16 weeks bid to 22 cents, and a lot of 600 Heavy Fowl bid to 14 0. The complete sale offered 53,400 birds in 16 lots and sold 52,100 head in 14 lots. Demand was fair for the light auction offer ings. Ready to cook demand was spotty and fairly good with prices reflecting the relatively few birds available. Live prices at farms during the period ranged 16 5 to 17.6 for reported sales of 875,000 head including 391,500 head sold at Thursday’s auction in Selbyville, Del. Estimated slaughter for the week end by eastern shore processors was 844,000 head compared to the 903,000 head last week end. The Delmarva broiler-feed ratio for the week ending January 3 was up four points from the previous week at 2.8. Broilers during the week averaged 14.08 per pound and mash cost the grower $99.86 per ton. The ratio for the com parable w eek a year age was 2 7 but six months ago it had jumped to 3 4 when broileis averaged 16.65 and mash cost $99.43 per ton. Slaughter heifers- High 22.75.
