County Soon To,Be Scabies Free, Veterinarian Tells Sheep Growers Hopes that Lancaster Coun ty can 'be declared a “scabies free” area by April 15 were expressed by a state Depart ment of Agriculture veterinar ian Tuesday night at a meeting of county shepherds. Dr. George B. Smith, in dis cussing the sitate’s sheep scab ies eradication program said the first two inspections total ing nearly 2,000 flocks and 14,- 500 sheep turned up 32 flocks ■with scabie mites present or suspected. All the infected or suspected flocks were dipped and Ithe third round ot inspections is now underway. Livestock specialist 'Ben Morgan fiom The Pennsylva nia State University told the sheep producers it is generally more profitable to low grading lamb crops for slaugh ter rather than selling them as feeder lambs. Morgan used ithe example of a western lamb “feeder who bought a flock of 1,200 utility lambs at about 65 pounds for $8 50 per head. The lambs were put on a self feeder, after dipping and drenching, and fed a mixture of gram and corn cob rough age The lambs made a pound of gram on five pounds of feed. The feeder realized a gross return of $6,000 on sales of 21 cents and better. The producer uho sold the lambs in the pool could have made this profit if he had ted the lambs himself. He said the trend toward feeding utility grade lambs to slaughter iveighls is gaming populanty m the state Farm eis can turn an $8 potential teedei lamb into an $lB slau ghter lamb, after you have developed a good breeding and management program, he said The mcieased trend toward farm feeding was reflected by the diop of utility giade lambs at state giaded pools fioin 33 per cent in 1961 to only seven per cent last jear. Moigan advised the feeders to aim for a 90 to 95 pound slaughtei lamb by getting more ciossbred \igor m the breeding progiam In a recent test wh ere double and triple crossbred ewes weie bred to purebred lambs, the lesultant lamb crop was larger and weaned at hea -1 lei w eights. ' .... He urged farmers to try to develop 150 ewes and the use of a good meaty purebred ram. He said a good ram is the cheapest ram you can buy in the long run. County Agent M. M. Smith also reviewed pasture renova tion and forage crop produc tion for producers. He said it is possible to get “one or two hay crops” this year from alfalfa or clover band seeded now without an oats nurse crop if chemical weed spray are employed.
