t—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 8, 1962 8 USDA Adopts Hog Cholera Regulations The U S Department of Agriculture has adopted regu lations to support the State- Federal effort to eradicate hog cholera from the United Stat es. These regulations, concern ed with interstate shipment of swine and virulent hog cholera virus, are scheduled to he published today in the Federal Register and will become ef fective Nov. 6. The proposed regulations were first published m the Federal Register on March 7 by ÜBDA's Agricultural Re aearch Service. The final regu lations were prepared follow ing consideration of com ments received from the in dustry. The new regulations prohibit interstate movement of swine infected with hog cholera. They also prohibit, except un der specified conditions, in terstate movement of swine ex posed to the disease, swine fed raw garbage, virulent hog cholera virus (after Jan 1, 1963), and swine treated with virulent virus (after July 1, 1963). It kills more pigs past weaning age than any other single disease. Eradi cation of hog cholera has been sought for many years by swine and meat - producting groups and State agricultural and livestock health authori ties The cooperative eradication program calls foi increasing hog cholera vaccination im proving the system for re porting disease, outbreaks, co oking garbage fed to swine, quarantining and disposing of infected and exposed swine herds, disinfecting premises and vehicles, and regulating movements of swine to pre vent spread of disease. An in formation and education pro gram is being developed to increase public understanding and insure the effective cooper ation needed to eradicate hog cholera.
