Nutritionists and food
economists often compare the

group Dairy foods rank at
the top of this comparison be

| Potato Spraying
an * Keeps Sprouts
Controlled
Maleic hydi azide sprayed on
gieen potato vines in the tield
will contiol sprouting of the
tubeis in storage, says Elmer
Pifer, extension agronomist.
This chemical will prevent
sprouting of potatoes for 6
months longer than untreated
potatoes even at storage tem
peratures of 55 to 65 degrees
Fahrenheight
Maleic hydrazide is of val
ue for table stock potatoes
which must be stored for sev
eral months It has a distinct
advantage for potatoes for the
potato chip processor by al
lowing potatoes to be stored
at relatively high temperatur
es which prevent the accumu
lation of sugars in the tubers.
It must NOT be used on
potatoes which will b© used
tor seed as it will hinder their
desired sprouting, Pifer cau
tioned.
This chemical should he
•sprayed after the tubers have
formed and while the vine is
green to allow movement of
the maleic hydrazide into the
tuber Spraying should be done
at least a week after blos
soms fall For varieties where
flowering does not occur, ap
ply 4 to 6 weeks before pota
toes are mature and ready for
hanest Maleic hydrazide sh
ould be applied when no ram
is expected for 24 hours
Maleic hydrazide is sold
commercially as MH-30
Be sure to follow the manu
facturer's label directions m
the use of maleic hydrazide
as a sprout inhibitor, he said.
