A century ago President Lincoln signed the Land Grant Act
commemorated by Penn State’s mural on the walls of Old Mam.
Twenty-five years later the Hatch Act provided the first sub
stantial suppoit for the Pennsylvania and other State Agricultural
Experiment Stations Resulting development of agricultural science
has paralleled advances in all technological fields Scientific dis
coveries have been applied to agriculture as vigorously in town as
on the farm Tillers of the soil can not make tractors, refine fuels,
generate electncity, synthesize chemicals, or perform a thousand
othei services now required by farm operators Nor can farmers
convert raw products into convenience foods No other country has
experienced a movement such as that started by the Land Grant
College system and none can match American agindustry. ,
