student of vocational agri
culture at Solanco high
School has been named win
ner in the annual truck es-
contest sponsored by two
Quarryvillc firms. Second
prize went to Richard Ken
neth Geyer, Quarryville Rl.
Prizes in the contest were
choice of one dairy heifer or
a feeding steer, not to exceed
$l5O in value for first place,
and $75.00 to be used in a
farming program of the win
ner’s cjioice for second place.
Writing on the theme, “The
Va T iue of the Motor Truck to
the Southern Lancaster Coun
ty Farmer”, Troop traced the
development of the trucking
industry from the “horseless
carnage to turnpike trains”.
He explained how farmers
have a truck for every need
and showed how every com
modity the farmer buys or
sells is effected by truck
transportation.

member of the Solanco FFA
and school band. He is ac
tive in youth fellowship work
in his church. His farming
program includes five Hol
stein heifers which he hopes
to build into a herd of dairy
cows
Geyer, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carson M. Geyer, point
ed out that farms located far
from rail transportation used
to be at a disadvantage, but
with modern truck transpor
tation, produce can be ship
ped from any farm quickly
and easily.
Geyer is a member of
Solanco FFA and the school
chorus. He is a junior mem
ber in the Holstein Associa
tion and is active in the
Mechanics Grove Church of
the Brethren. His farming
program includes a dairy
heifer, field corn & broilers.

expand their acreage this
year, but acreage of lima
beans and snap beans for
processing will be down, the
Pennsylvania Crop Report
ing Service said today.
These crops are grown
under contract from proces
sors in most instances Pro
cessors surveyed the last
week of March reported a
total of 10,000 acres of sweet
corn under contract. This
would be 900 acres above
last year, but one-eighth be
low average. Canners expect
to hand’e 60 per cent of the
crop and freezers 40 percent.
A total of 8,000 acres of
snap beans is indicated from
processors reports plus near
normal open market purch
ases. If this much acreage
eventually is harvested it
will be 200 acres less than
last year, butt 43 percent a
