EXAMINING ONE OF THE related species used in
breeding work to develop disease resistance in domesticated
tobacco is H B Engle, research agronomist at the South
eastern Fie’d Research Laboratory near Landisville. This
wild speces in the tobacco family is one of the seven spec
ies grown for exhibition and research purposes at the re
search farm. Many of these species are resistant to tobacco
disease and are used m crossbreeding work to incorporate

field and are able to make
up for lost time. It produces
excellent yields (in the ab
sence of mosaic) of a medium
- bodied, somewhat dark
chestnut leaf In growth hab
