14--Lancaal»r Farming, Saturday, July. 30. 1960 Corn Makes Growth Spurt In County 'Lancaster County’s com crop reflects the state Crop Reporting Service’s weekly roundup by showing much more rapid growth than pre viously, ■The state agency this we ek reports that com through out the state is growing fas ter but the cool nights con tinue to slow development of the crop. Tassles and silk are show ing in many of the county fields, but growth is short er than last year. Supplies of moisture are still good in most com fields, but tobac co and some vegetables will begin to feel the effect of dry weather soon. Some sec tions of the county had showers this week while oth ers were completely _ without precipitation. Small grain harvest is vir tually completed and most straw is baled. Second cut ting of alfalfa is practically completed and fields gener ally show good recovery and rapid growth. Tobacco growth has sne eded up, but tobacco -fields are very uneven in many sec tionc; 0 f the- county. Some fields have been topped whi le others show only four or five leaves and in many of the fields both the extremes can be found in the same planting.
