SILO UNLOADERS CAN
SAVE LABOR
Dairy farmers whose herds
number 35 Head or more' can
cut labor costs by using silo
unloaders and other automat
tic feed-handling equipment
in feeding grass silage to
cows, according to studies b>
the USDA’s Agricultural Re
search Service. Economist
Roy N Van Arsdall of ARS
says, as a result of these
studies that the use of auto
matic feed-handling equip
ment pays off and encourages
expansion in dairy herds oi
medium size, but does not
pay in small herds In larger
herds, the automatic unload
er was found to increase la
bor efficiency so that mech
anical unloading costs only
about 73 as much as hand la
bor with 60 cows, and half
as much for 100 cows. The
above estimates apply to
farms that feed a ration of
five-sixth grass silage and
one sixth hay for 6 months
of the year, and where labor j
is priced at $2 an hour.

ing brings results.
