Topsoil Moisture Ample
Over Most Pa. Farmland
Soil moisture supplies are
now ample in most sections
o£ Pennsylvania, the State
Department of Agriculture’s
Crop Reporting Service said
Tuesday.
Rains and local showers
over much of the State dur
ing the week ended Monday
resulted in considerable im
provement in pastures and
growth of hay crops, the ag
ency says in a weekly sum
mary of crop and weather
conditions.
Rainfall varied from less
than a tenth of an inch in
the extreme northwest to 3
inches in the Allentown
area.
Tobacco harvest in Lan
caster County, is in progress
on a limited basis, but is ex
pected to develop rapidly
before Sept. Ist.
Volume harvest of Golden
Jubilee, Red Haven and oth
er varieties of the main crop
of peaches is reported in
southern and central fruit
belts. Some early peaches
are available in other areas.
Quality and color of the
peach crop are good
Early apples continue to
move to market in normal
supply and some lahr varie
ties are being picked The
main crop continues to size
well, but continued rains are
needed for the crop to reach
maximum size and quality at
maturity.
