• DAIRY DAY
»(Continued from page 1)
heifers early, feed grain
with high-quality roughage
for at least 12 months, pos
sibly 15 -18 months. Don’t
be too quick to sell a first
calf heifer, without' giving
her a second chance, especi
ally when she is from a late
maturing “cow family." Plan
replacements from your top
cows with outstanding sires.
Also during the program,
county dairymen heard ex
tension specialists caution a
gainst use of excessive leng
ths of plastic hose in milk
ing equipment. Ivan G. Par
kin of Penn State noted that
hose lengths in excess of 10
feet are illegal for use in
New York state. He defined
the new “dumping station”
method as a stepping stone
to pipeline milking.
Both systems, he pointed
out, are intended in
maintaining sanitation if
properly u&ed—cu. man
ly, save enormous amounts]
of labor in milk handling. |
Dr. Samuel .puss, PSU
livestock specialist, warned
of a possibility of the cure
being worse than the disease
in the case of excessive use
of antibiotics in mastitis
treatment. He cautioned the
herdsmen to temper treat
ment of udder troubles with
reason, urging prevention
as the best cure.
HARDWOODS FOLLOW
PINES
Penn State’s School of
Forestry has found—that in
an unused field growing
back into timber, the first
crop of trees will be pre
dominately pine. Hardwoods
follow with the help of
squirrels, birds, and wind
distributing seeds.
