MECHANICAL POULTRY HOUSES
CAN MAKE YOU MONEY
IF You Are Not a Blind Man in the Hen House
BY MONBOE C. BABCOCK
MECHANIZATION is the big news in
egg production for 1958.
Everywhere I go poultrymen are
talking slatted floors, pit cleaners, auto
matic egg gathering, multiple tiers of
roosts, feeders, etc. I call them apart
ment houses for hens. I call the hens
cliff dwellers.
At first I thought all this mechaniza
tion was a lot of nonsense. Since many
good poultrymen have gone to mechan
ization, I’ve decided I’m just getting old.
I must be wrong.
Here is my present thought
1. Can you reduce housing equipment
cost per dozen eggs produced?
2 Can you reduce labor cost per doz
eggs’
3 Can you keep the same feed and
chick cost per dozen eggs produced
as you had on the floor?
4 Can you survive the squeeze if egg
prices drop’ If your answer is
yes to all four questions, then go
ahead.
Are you a Blind Man?
Too many poultrymen expect mech
anical equipment to take care of the
birds automatically. It “ain’t so.” With
mechamcal equipment you should go
through every pen three times a day.
See that every bird is getting all she
wants to eat That the water in. every
trough is deep and clean That every
bird has water easily available within
6 feet of her feed trough.

Birds crowded in at 1 sq. ft. per
bird will do o. k. if they are happy and
can get all they want to eat and drink.
If they stand around in big bunches and
are net active, you better do something
fast.
PRODUCTION TO EXPECT
To make money on mechanization
you should achieve 85'’o top lay with
birds gradually ddoppmg off to 50 af
ter 12 months of lay.
Get lots of feed and clean water in
all your pullets and you’ll be success
ful.
Don’t think in terms of labor and ov
erhead per hen. Think of these costs per
dozen eggs sold! If your birds “peak”
at 65 to 70 c », you’re in trouble and you
better act fast. It’s not the fault of the
chicks or the feed. It’s your fault.
Babcock Bessies Should Be Great
Birds in Mechaniccd Houses
We have no proof on this. We do
know that Bessies will not easily panic
m strange houses. They are gentle and
easy to handle. Even Bessies will have
to be debeaked in houses holding one
bird per square foot of floor space Bes
sies are very persistent, long distance
layers of big eggs that grade high on I
Q , sliell quality and freedom from
blood spots.
Thousands of our research birds are
now being tested in cages Thousands
will be tested in mechanized houses to
find out which families adapt best to
these new methods.
