Saturday, December 6, 1958 Beef Clubs Receive Steers For 1959 Feeding Projects A total of 115'feeder calves were distributed this week to members of Rd Rose and New Holland 4-H Baby Beef Clubs, as the county youngsters embarked on new feeding projects. Saturday morning saw 97 Red Rose club members draw lots for calves from Penna., New York, Ohio, Mary- land, Virginia, West Virginia and Nebraska beef breeding herds. This string of feeder stock was selected by a committee composed of County Agent Max Sm'th, Ira Rutt, Peach Bottom; Fred Linton, Quarry villo; Mylin Good, Manheim; Harry Showalter, Reinholds; Jay R Nisselus, Manheim, and Victar Longenecker, of Elizabethtown. Draw’rigs for both clubs were held at the New Hol land Sales Stables. The NH. club calves were purchased from Valley View Farms, Timonium, Md; the George Jackson Farm, Chris tiana and Bay Manor Farms, Lewis, Delaware. More specifically, the study showed that such profession als as teachers, medical per sonnel, lawyers and public servants ate 28 1 / j> pounds of broiler meat, per person per year. Miners eat 20 pounds each, the least of any group, while people in agriculture, farm eis, foresters and fishermen, each ate an average of 21 pounds of broiler meat each year. The study further showed that each city dweller con sumed about 2Vi pounds mo re broilers a year than did people living in the country. Farm owners ate about 1% lbs more per pear than did farm tenants, and small fam ilies consumed more per per son than large families. niiP^PsFf
