VoL 4. No. 3 Federal-State Reports October Chick Hatch Off 7% From 1957 Production The Penna. Crop Report ing Service announced this week production of chicks by commercial hatcheries in the state during October to taled 4,105,000, seven per cent below October, 1957. Broiler type production, which'constituted 87 percent of the total, was down a full seven percent, while egg type'cluck production, equal ing 13 percent of the total, was down two per cent, com pared to October, 1957. However, during the first 10 months of 1958, produc tion of all kinds of chicks in Pennsylvania was 13 percent above production of the com parable period in 1957. Larger November hatches than a year ago, PCRS re ports, in the Middle Atlan tic states, are in prospect. Broiler type eggs and egg type in incubators on No vember 1 in New York, Ngw Jersey and Penna. were one and 18 per cent, respectively, above Nov. 1 1957. Nationally, the service re ports, ' production of chicks during October was up 12 percent from last year and up 48 percent from the 1952- 56 average for the month. Production during the month totaled 149,012,000 chicks, compared with 132,709,000 in 1957 and the- 1953-56 aver age of 100,907,000. Chicks produced for broil ers were up 10 percent from last year and egg-type chicks were up 32 percent. Joy Rotarians served as sponsoring organization for the Eliza bethtown-Donegal 4-H Capon Club Round-Up this week, with eight members of the 4-H club entering 64 birds in ex hibit competition. The USDA has predicted larger November hatches than a year ago of both broiler and egg-type chicks, are in prospect. Authorization o± the regulation by the local group was made to bring local practices in line with herd improvement registry rules of the various breed groups. Under HIR breed rules, testers are prohibited from conducting milk tests in herds where the tester has a personal interest, such as_ in herds owned in part by him self, maintained on property owned by the tester, or herds owned by relatives The organization announ ced that the registered Hol stein herd of Warren B. Grif fith, Strasburg RD 1. aver aged 1,310 lbs of milk and 56 pounds of butterat during August tests.
