QUALITY CATTLE
DICTATE PROFITS
The number of cows in the
dairy herd is not always an in
dication of the profit-ableness of
the dairy enterprise: the produc
tion per cow is a much better
measure of production efficiency.
Robert A. Powers, Jr., Chester
county agent reports a recent
analysis of DHIA records shows
that cows producing 300 pounds
of butterfat per year return the
owner only $2O per year profit
after expenses; but a 500 pound
producer may return as much as
SJ32 profit for the year.
The number of cows needed to
pay expenses other than feed cost
is determined by the level of
production. Mr. Powers says 33
cows producing 250 pounds of fat
are needed to give $5OOO return

over feed cost, where only 13
cows producing 500 pounds of fat
are needed to give the same re
turns.
Dairy herds are expanding in
size but Mr. Powers warns that
the number of cows should not
be increased at the expense of
production per cow, or there will
be no net gain in income for the
dairymen. Often the number of
cows can be reduced, and with
better feed and care the remain
ing cows will return more profit
for the owner.

Labor difficulties forces Mr Bucher to sell his herd at this time. As
is always the case in a dispersal, many of the animals arent close to
freshening and the farsighted buyer can bolster his future production
by looking ahead and fill his anticipated needs at » lower price now.
Feed is plentiful, the cost to carry stale cows until they freshen will
be cheaper this year than ever before Mr. Bucher purchased most of
his foundation, stock at out better sales held, at Lancaster* The herd
is in splended condition I
