Nation’s Meat Production Hits 400 Million Lbs. for Third Week Meat production under federal inspection for the week ended November 1, 1958 was estimated at 408 million pounds according to the U S Depaitment of Agri culture This was the same as the 401 million pounds a week ago but 3 per cent below the 423 mil- lion pounds a year ago This was the thiid straight week in which total meat pio duction has been over 400 million pounds after being well below that figure most weeks since the end of Januaiy. Production con tinued below last veai although poik exceeded a year ago by 10 million pounds. Cattle slaughter estimated at 351.000 head was 2 pei cent be low the 358,000 the preceding week and 13 per cent below the 405.000 head for the correspond mg week a year ago. Beef produc tion was 203.2 million pounds compared with 207.3 million pounds the preceding week and 221.5 million pounds a year ago.
