    North American Wheat Production
Topic of ILS.-Canadian Talks
Canadian and American lead
ers meeting in Ottawa this week
are faced with the hard fact
that they will have to change
their thinking on the whole ques
tion of wheat growing and mar
keting. ,
Experts in both countries said
North America appears doomed
to hugh wheat surplusses for
years unless there is a radical
change in thinking.
Officials in both the wheat and
flour milling industries say the
world no longer needs the im
mense amounts of wheat North
America can produce.
THIS IS OF SPECIAL concern
to Canada where wheat bulks
much larger in the national
economy than it does in the
United States. And the problem
will persist regardless of how
the two nations solve their dif
ferences over U.S. wheat dis
posal methods.
Canada’s grievances recently
have dwindled because of sham
cuts in the U.S. barter program,
but they still exist. American

Dulles has said that U.S. wheat

joint defense measures, would be
major topics for talks when he

Ottawa this week.
The influencial magazine
Northwestern Miller predicts
US. exports of wheat and wheat
flour may drop to 275 million
bushels in the coming year, as
contrasted with 549 million last
year.
NORTHWESTERN Miller bases
this gloomy forecast main

North Africa, Italy, West Ger

Pakistan. The magazine predicts
Uncle Sam will be hard pressed
to find even ‘giveaway” markets
for wheat and flour. It sees In

slavia and Latin America all
steadily reducing their takings
of American surplus wheat and
flour.

crops in Europe and Africa, the
U.S. has a near record crop of
winter wheat this year.
Of all the free world wheat
countries, only Canada and Aus
tralia are having bad crop years.
Last week the dominion bureau
of statistics saw the possibility
that Canada’s crop was “unlikely
to greatly exceed the compara
tive failure level of 300 million
bushels.”
THERE DOES NOT appear to
be any sure new market for
North American wheat. Japan
and India could consume vast
quantities. But how would they
pay for it? Canadians have been
encouraged by selling some wheat
to Red China.
Russia’s ability to export
wheat may be partly political,
but it is definite. Whenever and
wherever gram will help the
Kremlin’s policies, it promptly
arrives shipload after shipload.
Consumption of wheat prod
ucts also is lagging proportion
ally as the diet of many peoples
diversifies steadily. Even m the
U.S. the produced tonnage of
breads and other bakery goods is
falling below the previous year’s
levels. President Paul Kelly Jr.
of the American Bakers -Assn,
said the lost sales could be re
captured by determine promotion
—but that would hardly make a
dent in the huge wheat carry
over.
FOR THE U.S. alone, the car
ryover could total 2,130,000,000
bushels one year from now
100 million bushels Over the
record figure of 1956-57. Can
ada’s carryover as of this July
31 is expected to be 650 million
bushels down from 950 mil
lion last year.

Gov. Leader Heads Dignitary List
Opening Conservation Exposition
HERSHEY, July 9 Govcrror
George M. Leader will join with
thousands of Pennsylvanians ir
honoring the Commonwealth’s
agriculture on the opening day of
the 16th National Plowing Con
test and Conservation Exposition
Aug. 21 at Hershey.
The Chief Executive will head
the list of dignitaries who will
pay tribute to Pennsylvania's
multi-billion farming industry
during the gigantic celebration
on 2,300 acres of the 12000-acre
Milton Hershey Farms.
ON THE FIRST DAY of the
exposition “Pennsylvania Agri
culture Day” Gov Leader will
tour the large farming area
where 30 conservation demon
strations will be seen, address an
audience in the 15,000-seat Her
shey stadium, present an award
to the national champion contour
growers voted 166,000 to 32,000
to retain wheat controls another
year.
The controls limit acreage to
55 million acres, but better farm
ing and increasing yields per
acre have offset the huge reduc
tion in acreage every year. And
this year’s fine weather has fur
ther helped defeat the acreage
controls.
