Pennsylvania Can Claim Birthplace
Of Early Improved Steel Plows
Historians note that the first
successful cast iron plow was
patented in 1797 by Charles
Newbold, a Philadelphia busi
nessmann whose foundry was lo
cated at Mt Holly, NJ. Thomas
Jefferson made studies of the
moldboard cast iron plow and
his suggestions were incorpor
ated by Robert and Joseph Smith
of' Bucks County, Pennsylvania
The Smith plow icceived wide
acclaim following patent in 1800
From 1810 “ploughing” match-

spoils at Pennsylvania agricul-
tural fairs Before they gave way
to horse racing a match was held
at the first State Fair in Harris
burg in 1851 The sport was re
vived in Central Pennsylvania
about 10 years ago and success
of the 1957 state contests at Her
shey last August gave rise to the tions they aim to avoid any de
mv'itation to hold the national lay or congestion for visitors and
championships there this year, spectators.
