The Pennsylvania Crop Report ing Service monthly report show ed Pennsylvania’s 16,344,000 lay ers produced an average of 19.41 eggs during May, a slight increase over the previous month and May 1957. For the first time in two years, the number of layers ex ceeded the same month of the previous year. There were 118,- 000 more layers on Pennsylvania farms this May than in the same month of 1957 May egg production was 10 mil lion more than this April 1958, and the May 1957 output Reports from poultrymen on June 1 in dicated an Unusually light sea sonal decline m egg production, the Crop Reporting Service add ed Pennsylvania egg production from January 1 through May 31 totaled 1,520 million, 4 per cent under the output in the same five month period of 1957. Prices received by farmers for eggs on May 15 averaged 41 cents per dozen, a 4 cent drop from April 15, but 8 cents above mid May prices last year Feed costs advanced about one per cent from mid-April and three per cent from May 1957. Va, June 18 Hereford steer calves brought the highest average return per head of the three ma3or beef breeds in the 1958 Spring Feed er Calf and Yearling sales held annually in Virginia* The sales, conducted at Roan oke, Harrisonburg, Richmond, Lynchburg and Winchester, at tracted 3,494 animals and brought a total return of $574,223 The final tabulation on the series of sales showed that fancy and choice Herefords returned an average of $l9O 64 against $lB4 92 for the nearest competi tive breed Hereford eoiv-"! Shuman, president of the Am erican Farm Bureau Federation today lauded the action of the House in rejecting the omnibus farm bill that has been submitted by the House agriculture commit tee “I am happy that the House re jected consideration of the omni bus bill as it would have hurt ra ther than helped farmers msthe long run,” the Federation presi dent said “What we need is a long-term program designed to free farmers from government regulation. The omnibus bill went in the opposite direction It offered farmers more quotas, more taxes, and more gov ernment regulation.
