Timing of Inscclidide Use Aids
In Control of Lygus Bugs, Lima Pest
More effective conti ol of lygus
bugs, a costly pest to lima-bean
growers, is possible by proper
timing of insecticide applica
t’ons, entomologists of the U.S
Department of Agriculture re
port
Results obtained in five years
of USDA research on lygus-bug
control were reported to the Pa
cific Branch of the Entomological
Society of America at its 42nd
annual meeting in San Diego,
Calif, yesterday.
M. W. STONE and Francis B.
Foley, scientists of USDA’s Agri
cultural Research Service sta
tioned at Whittier, Calif., said
that correct timing of insectici
dal applications increased yields
of dry beans by 200 to 250
pounds per acre
The average results, they said,
showed that a single application
of DDT, just after blossoming
began (early), or about two
weeks later when the pods ap
peared (intermediate), gave the
most significant increases in
yield Each of these applications
was superior to late application
•at the time the pods were 11,2I 1 ,2 to
two inches long
