Packers and Stockyards Act in
connection with the advertising
of beef was issued today by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
American Stores Company op
erates a large chain of retail gro
cery stores in Delaware, Mary
land, New Jersey, New York,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Vir
ginia and the District of Colum
bia, under various names, in
cluding “Acme ”
The complaint charges that
company advertisements have
suggested represented that their
beef is officially graded by the
United States Government, where
as a considerable portion of the
beef is not officially graded.
The complaint also charges
that the company advertisements
have represented that the beef
meets the requirements for Fed
rally raded choice beef, whereas
a considerable portion of the
beef does not meet these re
quirements
The case has been set down
for public hearings beginning 10
a.m, Aug. 12, 1958, at Philadel
phia Pa. at a place to be desig
nated. The respondents will be
required to show cause why a
cease and desist order should
not be issued.
