Oak Wilt Quarantine To Be Effected
June 1; Called ‘Public Nuisance’
HARRISBURG, May 28 An
oak wilt quarantine will be
established in Pennsylvania effec
tive June 1, the State Depart
ment of Agriculture announced
today
The disease, which attacks and
kills oak trees, has been designat
ed as a “public nuisance through
out the Commonwealth Persons
who “knowingly” permit the
plant to exist are in violation of
the quarantine
According to Dr William L
Henning, State Secretary of Agri
culture, oak wilt is a destructive
disease that is very difficult to
detect by untrained eyes In
cases of positive identification of
cak wilt disease the department
will undertake control or eradi
cation measures to the extent that
funds are available, he added
The Department of Agriculture
each year conducts an aerial sur
vey of the entire state to deter
mine presence of the disease and
also carries out a ground control
and eradication program All
All diseased trees and healthy
trees within root grafting distance
aie destroyed
Oak Wilt was found in nine
Pennsylvania counties during
