Lancaster Farming, Friday, May 23, 1958—11 Forest Fires Nationally Hit Low; Numbers Increase in Northeast Forest fires were held to a rec ord low of 83,400 nationwide in 1957, breaking the 100,000 mark for the first time, the U S De paitment of Agriculture an nounced today The statistics compiled by USDA’s Forest Seivice are based on reports from its field offices, State Foresters, the Department ol the Interior, and the Tennessee Valley Authonty. Last year’s recoid compares v ilh 143,000 forest fires in 1956 and 200,800 ten years ago in 1047 The area burned was almost halv ed dropping from 6,605,900 acres in 1956 to 3,409,000 in 1957 Ten years ago fires burned 23,225,932 acres MUCH CREDIT FOR the 1957 lecord is due the American pub lic USDA commended three pro grams for outstanding contribu tions to forest fire prevention One is the Smokey Bear Campaign sponsored by its Forest Service and the State Foresters under the leadership of the Advertising Council.
