Corn Borer Infestation Heavy;
Plow Down Stalk
HARRISBURG Pennsylvania
fanners today face loss of a mil
lion dollars or more in their
1958 corn crops due to a heavy
winter canj over of live larvae of
ihe European corn borer.
According to spot checks made
bv the State Depaitment of Agri
culture in stubble and stalk still
standing in fields on farms in 14
counties, 44 per cent of corn bor
er larvae aie still alive This com
pares with 46 per cent a year ago
when crop damage was estimated
at $958,000
Little time is left to reduce the
damage fiom the insect that
weakens corn stalks to the break

ears to reach maturity, the Bur
eau of Plant Industry warned
