Law Day, U.S.A. Celebration May 1
To Feature Court House Tours
President Eisenhower on Feb
3. 1958, officially proclaimed
Thursday, May 1, 1958, as Law
Day stating that ‘‘a day of na
tional dedication to the principle
of government under laws would
afford us an opportunity better to
understand and appreciate the
manifold virtues of such a gov
ernment and to focus the atten
tion of the world upon them.”
Governor Leader, Mayor
Monaghan of the City of Lan
caster, and County Commission
ers. Ccharles H. Pearce and
Herbert R. Wagaman, have also
proclaimed May Ist as Law Day
U. S. A.
Lay Day U S. A is the first
such public observance on a
nation-wide scale. The purpose
of the day is to strengthen the
nation’s dedication to the rule
of law as the foundation of our
free society and to make every
American citizen aware of the
rights and privileges he enjoys
by reason of our system of laws
and courts
The Lancaster Bar Association
has planned a program for the
local observance of Law Day U
S A. on May 1. 1958 Special
Courthouse tours for adults and
an educational special Law Day

designed for adults Since 1952
local lawyers have taken more
than 6,000 school students and
several adult groups through the
Lancaster County Courthouse.
The offices of the County Com
missioners, Quarter Sessions,
Prothonotary, Sheriff, Recorder
of Deeds and Register of Wills
will be open for visitation. A
person from each office will be
present with a member of the
Bar to explain the functions of
the office and answer any ques
tions Visual displays will be
placed in the office and will in
clude items of historical interest,
such as James Buchanan’s Will.
The specia 1 Law Day Trial,
while fictitious, will be strictly
educational and will be in the
Court Room It will correspond
as closely to an actual trial as
time permits. Lawyers and
Courthouse employees will make
up the cast.
It is appropriate that May Day
this year should also be Law
Day U S A, for it calls to our
attention the contrast between
our democratic system of gov
ernment and 'the arbitrary sys
tem of government m communist
countries where freedom char
actenstic of a democracy do not
exist. In communist countries
today May 1 is an official holiday
to acclaim the communist way of
life. The local observance plan
ned by the Lancaster Bar Associ
ation is designed to show each
citizden how democracy works

1958 NEPPCO
Exposition Has
‘Safari’ Theme
HARRISBURG, Pa. Several
thousand poultrymen from every
corner of the 14 northeastern
states will trek their way to the
Parm Show Building, here, in
October for the 21st exposition
of the Northeastern Poultry Pro
ducers Council (NEPPCO).
-‘Safari to Poultry Profits” has
been picked as the theme of the
giant event, slated for Oct. 7-8 9.
Not only does the slogan aptly
describe the trip from all cor
ners of the NEPCO territory, ac
cording to Council officials, but
it typifies the poultry industry’s
drive to maintain profit margins,
while bringing consumers a high
quality pxoduct at reasonable
prices.
“With the spotlight on profit
margins, it is imperative that the
pcultryman focus his attention on
new developments that will make
production and marketing
efficient,” declared Dr. Alfred
Van Wagenen, managing director
of the Council.
“The Harrisburg exposition will
spotlight the new techniques that
will make this advance posible."
at the' local level.
