Tobacco Buying
In Conn. Valley
40 Pet. Complete
Tobacco buyers in the Connecti
cut Valley were out early this
year and it is estimated that the
binder crop there is now about
40 per cent sold
Quality there is the lowest in
years due to the drouth Produc
tion is down It is estimated that
only 3,000 acres of binder were
grown during the past season
Valley growers are under the
government price support pro
gram which gives them a 60 cent
a pound floor under the product
Most of the tobacco nioved sold
for this figure or a few cents
higher.
Of four major cigar manufac
tmers, two are not buying strong
ly One company is showing only
a moderate interest in the crop,
and the other has been very
strong in the field.
A note of interest in the tobac
co trade is that buyers in the
burley areas of Tennessee and
Kentucky aie buying leaf this
year that would never have reach
ed the ouction floor in other
years. The tobacco most in de
mand there is a large heavy dark
leaf instead of the usual light
nuld variety.
This year only about one per
cent of the burley crop is going
into goi ernment storage. This one
per cent is light mild leaf that
usually commands a premium in
the cigarette trade.
Southern farmers are now
growing tobacco more like it is
grown here using plenty of
nitrogen to get a heavy dark
leal
Just how far this trend in pro
duction will continue is a matter
of conjecture and some concern
to Southern producers and buy
ers If the cigarette companies
continue to desire strong dark
leases, it will mean the develop
ment of new types and varieties
of tobacco plants and a drastic
shift in the methods of produc
tion.
