Lancaster Farming, Friday, Nov. 29, 1957—15 Agriculture Undersecretary Outlines Agricultural Prospects for 1958 In a speech made Monday be fore the stockholders of the Fed eral Land Bank of St. Louis, Un der Secretary of Agriculture True D. Morse outlined the farm out look for 1958. He listed the following points as things that can be expected. one: Farmers will get about the same average prices as in 1957. two: Agricultural output will remain high, and could well reach a new record. three: Further increases in pro duction costs may largely offset any rise in gross farm income, leaving operators’ net realized in come from farming about the same as in 1957. four: With increasing income from non-farm sources and with decreasing numbers of persons on farms, this could mean a slight gain in per capita income of farm people. five; The parity index is likely to creep up further, resulting in a further slight drop in the par ity ratio. six: Retail prices may rise fur ther because of increases in mar keting charges. . seven: Exports of agricultural products will continue high, but will probably be less than in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1957. eight: Government payments for price support, Soil Bank and export programs will continue to be large.
