Closely controlled experiments by members of this group of re search workers, indicate that the practice of injecting laying hens with antibiotics to produce non infected chicks is not a sure-fire method of controlling the spread of the chronic respiratory dis ease. In a number of trials, treat ed hens produced infected chicks, and non-treated hens produced healthy chmks Keeping chicks in small num bers and segregation helped pro duce disease-free flocks, the tests showed. An experimental, rapid blood test for the diagnosis of chronic respiratory disease produced promising results, but more re search is needed to devlop im proved or new testing techniques. The blood test determines the st tus of pleuropneumonia-like or atus of pleuropheumoma-hke or been identified as the cause of chronic respiratory disease by re searchers in the Federal-State co ordinated program and certain other scientists interested in the problem. They also have demon strated the frequent complication of this condition by other poultry diseases. Such mixed infections present a serious economic prob lem to poultrymen because of the higher death-rate in infected, flocks, fewer eggs, and greater feed and medication costs result ing from this condition.
