When cleaning out the mixture of mud and manure this spring, why not begin a progressive in stallation of a paved yard 7 Start this year with a 10 foot strip alongside the barn, add more as time and money permit, suggests Associate County Agent Harry Sloat. If the drainage is good and the yard bottom is hard packed and not soaked by see page or springs,' place the four inches of concrete right on the clean, hard, scraped surface, he recommends. If loaded wagons and heavy equipment is to be driven over the paved area, in crease the thickness of the-con crete to six inches. Spongy or soft pockets should be dug out, filled with gravel, stone or cind ers and well packed before plac ing the concrete On poorly drained soils four to six inches of gravel should be placed under the concrete The outer edge of a paved yard must be at least twice nor mal paving thickness to with stand the abuse of vehicles over the edge. Don’t forget to place expansion material between the concrete and building foundation or water-tanks.
