THE TOP BULL in the'Warwick-Dispersal
sale was Warwick Beaming Boy, here be
ing handled by herdsman Urns King. C. D.
(Pete) Swaffer,, Tulsa, Okla., is the auction
eer. The 29 month old Farm Show grand
champion brought $650, paid by North-
Most Warwick Shorthorns Stay
In Pennsylvania as Herd Disperses
The dispersal sale of Warwick
Farms Shorthorns Tuesday was
in some ways a disappointment
and” others very satisfying. The
major disappointment is, of
course, that such a fine beef
cattle herd is lost to Lancaster
County.
The satisfying aspect is that
a majority of the cattle are stay
ing m Pennsylvania. This includ
es 10 head that were sold to Lan
caster County farmers.
The 65 head of cattle averaged
$268.50 with the five bulls aver
aging $392 and the 60 females
averaging $258.40 each.
The herd sire, Warwick Flying
Fortress, three time grand cham
pion at the Farm Show, was sold
to Ralph Green, Clarksville, Md.,
for $6OO.
However, his son topped him.
Warwick Beaming Boy, grand
champion at this years Farm
Show, sold for $650 to Northwest
Farms, Butler, Md.
Top price at the sale was
$1,050 paid by Penn State for
Warwick Rosewood Rhoda, a red
six year old cow that is in calf
to Plying Fortress.
Herman Purdy, Penn State
herdsman, also bought three
other females to- add to the
umvesity’s top ranking Short
horn herd. They include War
wick Flying Thyme, a yearling,
$410; Waiwick Duchess, a two
year old, $230; and Warwick
Lavender Thyme, four and a
half, $220.
Probably the most disappoint
ing price to herd owner Irl A.
Baffin and herdsman Orus King
was the $260 paid for Warwick
Princess. The senior two-year old
was grand champion at the 1956
Farm Show, the New 'Jersey
State Fair and senior champion
at the 1957 Farm Show.
However, she had lost her calf
recently and sold open. She went
to J. S. Campbell & Son,, West
Sunbury, Pa.
Perry Valley Wonder,, two
year old bull, being-used as the
Warwick herd sire, was sold-to
Warren Buck, Lititz, for $l9O.
Warwick Flyfort Banker and
Warwick Flying Prince, two
other sons of Flying Fortress,
topped the junior sire’s price.
Banker went to E. M. Hill, Ox
ford for $3OO and Prince sold to
S. C. Hilton, Durham, N. C., for
$220.
Elmer M. Hoover of Bird-in-
Hand bought three aged cows.
The animals and their price are:
Princess Royal 103rd, 15 years
old, $330; Queen of Scots, 13
years old, $225 and Hickories
Augusta Brae, nine years old,
$lBO. The first two cows sold
with Flying Fortress sons at
their side.
H. P. Bucks & Son, Palmyra
paid $430 for an open yearling
heifer, Warwick Flyfort Augusta.
H. W. Bard, Denver, bought
two cows witlr calves at side.
They are Warwick Gloster Duc
hess and Warwick Lady Laura
selling for $270 and $260 respec
tively.
Other County and area buyers;
Paul W. Minnich & Son, Lititz,
(Continued-on page 13)
west Farms, Butler, Md. In so doing, he
topped his sire, Warwick Flying Fortress
by $5O. The famous Warwick senior sire
was purchased by Ralph Green, Clarks
ville, Md. (LF Photo)
