Record $2B Million from National Forests WASHINGTON (USDA) Checks totaling $28,035,256.40 were mailed, to the 40 states and 2 territories containing national forest lands as their share of re ceipts from those forests, the U. S. Department of Agriculture an nounced 'today. These checks represent 25 per cent of the total money collected by the Forest Service from national forests be tween July 1, 1955 and June 30, 1956. This amount is the largest ever sent to the states and is a 45 per cent increase over the $19,381,154.57 sent a year ago. It reflects the record receipts from timber sales, grazing per mits, and other land uses from national forests in fiscal year 1956. The size of-the check sent each state depended on the receipts collected from the national for ests within that state. Some states, therefore, received a sub stantial increase over last year; others received less. According to the law the money sent to the states must be used for the benefit of public roads and schools within the counties in which the national forests are located.
