was within ten miles of Philadel
phia when they saw 42 Fords
leaving the assembly line each
hour.
At the Medford Packing Co.,
the Lancaster -County visitors
were guests,of W. E. and W. L.
Medford, where they saw
slaughtering of cattle and pro
cessing of meats. \V. E. Med
ford welcomed the group, ex
plaining the firm has been in
operation 27 years, drawing
much of its livestock from the
Corn Belt. Considerable stock
moves in from Lancaster
County as well. Hogs were on
hand from Indiana.
Mr Medford pointed out that
the plant avoids garbage-fed
hogs
At Medford Farms near West
Grove, the feeders were guests
of the company at lunch. There
they saw barn feeding of 150
prime cattle representing several
breeds Calves were purchased
from Nebraska and South Da
kota at 400 to 450 pounds, and
with stilbestrol-fortified feeds
are gaming a pound or more
daily.
Accompanying the group were
M. M. Smith, Lancaster County
agricultural agent, Dwight Youn
kin and Thomas W. King, live
stock extension specialists from
the Pennsylvania State Univer
sitv. Mr King told the group,

Hunter Licence Sales

The 1955 resident hunter li
cense was bought by 98,542
Pennsylvanians Included in the
total are 766 licenses issued free

Non-resident 1955 licenses
were bought by 32,471 persons
who came to the Keystone State
to enjoy the sport of hunting.
The number of 1955 hunter
licenses issued in Pennsylvania
was, therefore, 931,013 Add to
that figure -tKe number of per
sons who hunt legally' on their
own property and adj'oimng pri
vately-owned land without li
cense and the grand total of all
persons who hunted wildlife in
Pennsylvania during the last li
cense year reaches the neighbor
hood of one million.
