There are several new schools opening
in Lancaster County this fall. One of the
newer schools, shown in portion above, is
Hempfield School just south of Landis-
made by L. B. Silver of Salem,
Ohio. He began breeding Ches
ter Whites in 1863. He sought to
improve the size and quality ot
his hogs through selection and
was said to have worked con
siderable improvement. L. B.
Silver was succeeded in his
breeding'operations by his son,
Carl Silver. Mr. Silver had pri
vate facilities for recording his
hogs prior to the time the O. I.
C. Swine Breeders’ Association
was established m 1897. This
strain of hogs became popular

and were called the Ohio Im-
proved Chester, or were more
qommonly referred to as the
“0.1 C.” A separate, herd book
was established for the descen
dants of Mr. Silver’s herd al
though later other hogs that
did not descend from the Silver
herd were included. The mod
ern representatives of the 0. I.
C. indicate that, whatever out
standing merit the Silver hogs
may have had as compared to
the regular Chester White has
long since been lost.
If writings 'in agricultural
publications are to be taken as
a criteria, there was apparently
very little improvement in the
Chester White from 1870 until
1900. Many agricultural journa
lists referred to them as lacking
in uniformity of type and gen
eral merit of other breed dur
ing that period. F D. Cobourn
suggests that the specimens of
the Chester White breed exhibit
ed at the World’S Fair, Colum
bfan Exposition in 1893 were to
be considered quite inferior to
the best representatives ot the
other breeds that were exhibited
In the next fifteen years consid
erable improvement was made
in Chester Whites and by 1915
very creditable exhibits were
made of the breed at the lowa
State Pair and other major
shows of the mid-west.
Breeds of Livestock in Ameri
can, by H W. Vaughan, 1931,
suggests that an unauthorized
infusion of Yorkshire blood oc
cured m the breed and that con
siderable improvement resulted
from this infusion. Concerning
this introduction of outside blood
he says, “Considerable York
shire blood found its way into
a number of Chester White
herds beginning about 1917 or
1918. Curing the next two years
it was common knowledge that
these infusions were being
made. Among the 1386 Chester
Whites shown at two of the
largest shows of the breed in
1920, many “first cross” and
‘second cross” pigs carried 25%
of Yorkshire breeding. Many of
these srowed unmistakable evi
dence of the Yorkshire blood in
the erect ear' and Yorkshire type
of head, while other members of
the same litter showed no evi
dence of the Yorkshire infusion
except in the increased length
of body, length of leg, and im
proved smoothness and quality.
Pnor to this, low backs, weak
pasterns, and spreading toes
were all too common faults in
the breed, and prominent
shoulders were also rather" too
noticeable. The infusion of
Yorkshire breeding brought an
improvement in the Chester
White in all these respects and
there is no question that it was
of benefit to the breed ”
Many heids have contributed
to the great improvement in
the Chester White from 1900
down to the present time. One
of these herds is that of F. D.
Humbert of Nashua, lowa, who
used the great boar, Nashua Boy
12563 in his held. This boar was
bred by Hardin Brothers ot
Lima, Ohio, and was farrowed
in 1903 This boar proved to be
a most prepotent sire in the
Humbert herd and became a
most outstanding sire. Most ot

Yorkshire Infusion
the leading boar lines of the
breed and most modern Chester
Whites trace many, many times
to him. There are many other
outstanding farmer breeders ot
Chester Whites who have made
considerable contributions. In
fact, most of the improvement
in the breed has come through
small breeders rather than
through large operators of
fanciers. Some of the men that
might be named are: Albert H.
