For Storage of
Wheat Stocks

Puerto Rico Regains
Allotments on Sugar
Washington, (USDA) The
US. Department of Agriculture
has announced a revision ot al
lotments to processois of the
1956 mainland and local sugar
quotas for Puerto Rico which
pei nuts marketing of the full
allotments The revision is based
on final data on production of
sugar from 1955-56-crop cane,
1955 marketings, and January 1,
1956, inventories of sugar. The
revised allotments are estab
lished on the same basis as those
in Sugar Regulation 814 15.

stoiage costs in 22 representa
tive reinfoiced concrete eleva
i tors in western Kansas, in 1,000-
to 13,104-bushel round steel
• bins, and in 25,000-bushel capa
i city quonset-type buildings The
Kansas Agricultural Experiment
Station cooperated with the
Marketing Research Division of
the Agricultural Marketing Ser
vice in making this s’tudy.
A sharp increase in the unit
cost of storage accompanies each
decrease in degree of. utilization
of storage space Researchers
found that the cost of storage
m a 100,000-bushel elevator
used at one-fourth capacity was
29 51 cents for each bushel
stored, or 19 3 cents more than
the cost per bushel for wheat
stored in the same elevator used
to capacity Approximately 67
per cent of the inciease in cost
occurred when utilization de
creased from 50 to 25 per cent.
Costs of storing wheat on
farms were generally at least
'5O par cent higher a bushel if
storage space were only half
used than if it were all uSed,
the report shows. The annual
i < ,t of storing wheat in a 1.000-
bi.shel bin used at full capacity
was 8 cents a bushel, but the
cost increased to about 12 cents
at 50-per cent utilization
