Livestock Open
Class Show in
State Assured
E&KRISBIJRO Assurance
that Pennsylvania soon may
largest open class live
stock show in the Eastern Unit
ed States came today from Gov
ernor George M- Leader.
He signed a bill April 12
which provides $50,000 to the
State Department of Agriculture
for the purpose of developing
and operating an annual live
stock show each fall in the State
Farm Show building.
Flnrt In Fall of 195?
The Governor requested State
Secretary of Agriculture William
L. Henning to get the first Penn
sylvania National Open Live
stock Show underway for the
fall of 1957. Liberal premiums
wrll attract exhibits from some
of the best breeders of beef cat
tle, swine and sheep in all parts
of the United States and from
Canada, he said. The “open”
show differs from the State
Farm Show which restricts en
tries to Pennsylvania breeders
only. The livestock show will be
held two or three months ahead
of the January Farm-Show each
year.
Governor Leader said Penn
sylvania livestock men have
been urging an open class show
for many years. The purpose is
"to encourage and develop the
livestock and allied industries
as wefli as promote grassland
farming as part of a conserva
tion program for the preserva
tion of soil resources.”
Use Farm Show Arena
The Department of Agricul
ture may make allocations of
the fund, as it deems appropri
ate, to an incorporated associa
tion whose purposes are in ac
cord with the intent of the act,
the Governor explained.
‘'This is one' more good use
for the Farm Show Arena and
livestock bams and will bring
national recognition to Pennsyl
vania, 1 ” he declared.
