Red Rose 4H
Opposes Any
Sale Changes
Mei'bers of the Red Rose 4-H
Baby Beef Club voted almost
unanimously against any change
in the present method of dis
tributing proceeds from the sale
of champion steers at the Penn
sylvania State Farm Show, in a
recent meeting
Two new plans would with
hold from exhibitors of the
champion and top-selling steers
part of the sale price. Money
then would be divided: among
all 4-H club members showing
steers in the statewide show
Now “Winner Take All”
The present system, a “winner
take all” plan, received 111
favorable votes, while three
members voted for a change.
Pennsylvania State officials
presented the alternate plans at
the request of several counties

APRIL CANCER MONTH
President Eisenhower has pro
claimed April as Cancer Control
Month and urged all Americans
to support agencies working to
wipe out the disease. In 1938,
Congress passed a resolution j
calling on the President to set
April each year as Cancer Con
trol Month Mr Eisenhower
urged governors of states, tern- 1
tones and possessions to issue
similar proclamations
who are seeking a more equit
able basis foi rewarding 4-H
club members who show steers
at the Farm Show in hopes more
youth will enter competition
there The Red Rose Club showed
the grand champion there the
last four years
Club leaders stated their op
position to a change “Lessening
prize monies also lessens incen
tive,” they pointed out.
Arthur MacArthur Speaks
Guest speaker at the meeting
was Arthur MacArthur, Polled
Hereford breeder from Port De
posit, Md., a recent exhibitor at
the Eastern Polled Hereford as
sociation show in Lancaster,
who outlined “My Experiences
in Feeding and Showing Fat
Steers ” Mr. MacArthur, who has
won numerous championships,
pointed out that each of his
four children have won a 4H
championship in the Eastern
National Livestock Exposition at
Timonium, Md
He gave'the group many good
points on feeding, kind of
foods, care and grooming of
steers for show.
